Take 10 takes hold!

Take 10 Tracking CardWhen it comes to destination walking in Clark County, the answer is sometimes.  However, if you thought you saw more people walking this summer, you are right.  Thanks to Take 10, our summer 2008 program that invited people who live and/or work in Clark County to walk where they would normally drive, over 175 individuals and organizations put their feet to the ground instead of the gas pedal.  Individuals, families, community groups, employees and more distributed 3,000 Take 10 Tracking Cards.  205 participants turned in their Tracking Card by the deadline of August 29, 2008.

Participants' Stories

We live in Fisher's Landing with all of the conveniences of stores, schools, parks, and other services. So it is easy to walk to places. We also feel very safe to walk in our neighborhood.

With the price of gasoline I had no choice. I now take the bus to work and walk from Broadway and 13th to Kauffman and 13th. Also, since I don't have my car at work I walk to the bank and to the post office and to get lunch, etc; everything I used to drive to do. Just wish there was a downtown supermarket to I could get the groceries here too.

I walk in neighborhoods for exercise. I live near Pacific Park and will walk there as well when it opens. I would walk to the Mill Plain/164th area for some of my shopping if there were sidewalks all the way. Sidewalks on 18th St. and 172nd Ave. are hit and miss. Even 162nd Ave. is missing a stretch of sidewalk north of 1st St. I have walked these streets occasionally but do not feel very safe where there is no sidewalk, unless of course, I walk in the ditch.

I've managed to get my 6 year old daughter excited about walking. I told her I needed her help to get healthy and that she could help me by walking with me and encouraging me to get moving on the days that I really would rather not. We started walking every night when I get home from work rain or shine. We put her baby sis in the stroller and take off. Sometimes we have a destination like the grocery store. There are many advantages to us walking: 1. The obvious health benefits. 2. Saving on gas. 3. When we walk to the grocery store, I buy less since there is a limited amount we can carry/put in the bottom of the stroller. 4. We get to have some really good conversations. 5. Sometimes baby sis falls asleep before we get home which makes bedtime much easier. My daughter has definitely been a great encouragement and has surprised me by her enthusiasm.

I am new to Clark County and I work for the Bank of Clark County. We have a new branch on the East Side at 164th & First. I have several routes I walk everyday on breaks and lunch hour. I will be sharing the Take 10 with our staff!

I have started taking the bus to work from Battle Ground at least 3 or 4 days a week. I also try to group all errands in one trip on the weekend instead of several small trips. And, since I now ride the bus, I will be walking my errands around town on my lunch.

Three reasons walking is better than driving:

    1. You get exercise
    2. You don't hurt the ozone
    3. You can hold hands
